Water Type Dual-Type Chart

This chart shows how much damage a Water-type move deals to every combination of two defending types. Rows are the first defender type and columns are the second. Each cell gives the damage multiplier: 4 is extremely effective (400%), 2 is super effective (200%), ½ is not very effective (50%), ¼ is highly resistant (25%) and 0 means no effect. Blank cells are normal 1× damage, and the gray diagonal marks a type paired with itself, which is not a valid dual type.

Water Type Summary

The most common type and a dependable all-rounder with only two weaknesses.

Water is the most common Pokémon type and one of the best balanced. It hits three types for super effective damage and is resisted by only three, while its own weaknesses are limited to Electric and Grass. That combination of reliable offense and few weaknesses makes Water a safe pick on almost any team.

Water on offense

Water-type moves are super effective against Fire, Ground and Rock and are resisted only by Water, Grass and Dragon. The type also has excellent utility: Scald can burn, Surf and Hydro Pump hit hard, and moves like Scald and Flip Turn give bulky Water-types both offense and momentum.

Water on defense

Water-types are weak only to Electric and Grass and resist Fire, Water, Ice and Steel, with no immunities. That small weakness list is why so many defensive staples — Toxapex, Dondozo, Milotic — end up as Water-types, often paired with a second type to cover Electric or Grass.

Notable Water-type Pokémon

Notable Water-types include Blastoise, Gyarados, Milotic, Vaporeon, Swampert, Greninja, Toxapex and Dondozo. The type spans nearly every role, from rain sweepers to the sturdiest walls in the game, which is a big part of why it is so common.
